Director: Jaan Tooming

(28.03.1946 – 05.04.2024)

Jaan Tooming was a director and actor, who was an active contributor mostly in theatre art but also in cinematography. He made four fiction films: “Endless Day” (1971/1990), “Colourful Dreams” (1975, with Virve Aruoja), “The Misadventures of the New Satan” (1977), “Mees ja mänd” (1977). His works often had avant-garde visuals and brought fresh and new viewing points to the film department. Filmmaker Marko Raat has said: “Tooming has always been the only Estonian theatre expert that has taken film seriously, delved with passion into the special possibilities and means of expression of this art, and the result is also appropriate – these are some of the most daring and inspiring films made here.” Moreover, Tooming has done acting projects in films e.g. “Kolme katku vahel” (1979) and also in half of his own films.
