Director: Peeter Urbla

Peeter Urbla  is a director, screenwriter and producer. His career started with the film almanack, called “Daisy Petal Game” (1977) where he directed shortfilm “Promenade”. The short film was also his thesis work for two-year screenwriter and director courses in Moscow. Urbla was one of the newly risen young talents with Peeter Simm, Helle Karis, Arvo Iho and so on, who all played a role in making “Daisy Petal Game”. After two years he released his feature film debut “Murder on the 31st Floor” (1979, 1980), which was also very successful and won an All-union debut award. Furthermore, he has made several fiction films e.g. “The Song of the Summer” (1982), “I’m Not a Tourist, I’m Living Here” (1988), “Shop of Dreams” (2005) and documentaries e.g. “Malle Leis, 1980, Võrumaa, serigraafia”, “Ruja” (1982), “Master Painter and the Blended Colours” (2016). But mainly he is known for producing work. He has co-/produced about 60 films. Urbla was also one of the first people to bring Western film crews to Estonia in the 90’s and his tireless work saw Estonian film integrated into the world cinema. In addition, Urbla has worked under Tallinn Art Hall, Tallinnfilm, Estonian Television, Estonian Telefilm and founded his own Exitfilm studio. In 2022 he was awarded with a Tallinn Black Nights Lifetime Achievement Award.
