A cabaret from the 1930`s. A dreamy violin and dreamy dance couples. People who have come to forget the world and its problems. However, the aggressive tones of the fifer force the old violinist to retreat and transform the thus for peaceful cabaret into a hideous orgy. The world marches towards its doom supported by war machines. What could possibly stop this process? Do people still have the sense to listen to the voice of reason? Nevertheless, in the end the director leaves us with a melancholy sense of hope. The primeval, natural fertility tree and its life sap survives despite the horrors of history. The film is based on three graphic prints, “Cabaret”, “The Preacher” and “Hell”, by the famous Estonian artist Eduard Wiiralt.
