Vilsandi National Park, located on the western edge of Saaremaa, is the oldest nature reserve in the Baltic states and encompasses nearly a hundred islands, of which Vilsandi is the only one inhabited by people within the protected area. A rich variety of bird and plant species have found a home here, as just a few thousand years ago this island and its companions were still under water. How Vilsandi’s relatively young biosphere is developing is the main focus of local nature researchers.
